Journal

Today was a beautiful Spring day so we decided to head up to the Salmon River Trail for a hike. It’s an easy 30 minute drive to the trail head just south of Welches on Salmon River Road.

We’ve been on this trail a few times, but never all the way out to the Goat Creek Camp viewpoint. Conditions couldn’t have been better— cool and sunny 65 degrees with a light breeze. The trail is well-maintained, consists of soft forest duff and follows the Salmon River for the first 2 miles. Then it climbs steadily for the next 2.5 miles to the Goat Creek crossing.

We met a few people on the way up. Traffic was a bit heavier on the way down with the requisite collection of dogs-accompanied-by-hikers.

Had a short snack at Goat Creek Camp (not really a camp, though there are a couple of well established spots right off the trail) then turned back. We plan to return and make more of a loop that looks to be about 13 miles and combines #665 by Kinzel Lake and then #793 past Devil’s Peak. This would be a great one to make into an overnight trek.
